Server Consolidation Offers
Security, Stability
A growing number of administrative units at Lehigh
University employ unique third party software applications
to support their mission.
Typically these applications
entail the use of computer servers connected to the campus
network and require daily data backups. A stable, secure
environment for the server(s) is also important, especially
when protection of the data is explicitly required by
federal regulations.
Library and Technology Services has
re-allocated internal resources to provide support for these
software application servers. The purpose of this new
program is to take advantage of new technologies (virtual
servers and blade configurations) that will provide savings
for the university as a whole while maintaining best
practices, especially in the provision of a stable, secure
environment.
LTS is calling the program the
Server Consolidation Program or SCP. In brief,
administrative units can “consolidate” their applications
server(s) within the LTS secure computer environment and
receive routine daily data backup services at no direct cost
to the unit. Units will retain financial responsibility for
hardware, backup media, software, and life cycle
replacement. Units participating will be asked to sign a
document annually that summarizes LTS and administrative
unit responsibilities.
Roy Gruver, LTS Director for
Technology Management Services, is responsible for
implementing this new service. Please contact Roy at

for your application.
