Brown and White Archive to be Introduced Sept. 10th
At noon on Thursday, September 10th, Special Collections
Librarian Ilhan Citak will introduce the newly launched
digital archives of The Brown and White, Lehigh’s
student newspaper, to the campus. The program will take
place in Linderman Library, Room 200, and is sponsored by
the Friends of the Lehigh University Libraries.
This resource constitutes Library and Technology Services’
12th and largest digital site: a fully searchable digital
edition of The Brown and White from 1894 to 2000.
Larger than all other digital library projects combined, it
is live now at the web site:
http://digital.lib.lehigh.edu/brownandwhite
The archive will serve not only as a valuable resource
for the Lehigh community but also as a useful research site
to explore aspects of the history of higher education, the
development of the local community, and much more.
The digitization of The Brown and White took
approximately three years and involved outside contractors
as well as contributions from Wally Trimble and Diane Dymek
from the Journalism Department. The LTS Team consisted of
Christine Roysdon, Ilhan Citak, Rob Weidman, Tim McGeary,
Mark Canney, Kathleen Morrow, Roseann Bowerman, Jean
Johnson, Lois F. Black, Sue Cady and student Kathryn Lieber
‘09. The primary vendor, OCLC’s Preservation Resources in
Bethlehem, was represented on the project by Christine
Guenther and Joan DaShiell.
Currently all of the Lehigh University yearbooks, The
Epitomes, are being digitized as well. This project is
partially funded by a grant from the Sloan Foundation to
Lyrasis , a regional library cooperative to which Lehigh
University belongs. The project is slated for completion
sometime in spring 2010.
